Gidarjil Development Corporation is an indigenous-owned enterprise that provides a reliable and reputable base for programs that benefit indigenous Australians. It was founded in 2000 by representatives from the Gurang and the Gooreng Gooreng peoples, who are the Traditional Owners of the coastal areas between Gladstone and Bundaberg in Queensland. Gidarjil hosts two Indigenous Land and Sea Ranger teams, one based in Bundaberg, and one based in Gladstone. The rangers work to protect and restore the cultural and natural values of their ancestral lands and waters, such as the Granite Creek wetlands, the Mon Repos turtle rookery, and the Great Barrier Reef. Gidarjil also operates Gidji Art, a social enterprise that showcases the artworks and stories of local indigenous artists.

Gidarjil turned to Queensland Computers for help in improving their IT systems and collaboration capabilities. With Queensland Computers’ expertise, Gidarjil was able to upgrade their existing hardware, as well as improve their networking to better serve its community.

Queensland Computers provided Gidarjil with a comprehensive solution that addressed all its IT challenges. The team began by upgrading Gidarjil’s network infrastructure to enhance performance and stability. The Queensland Computers team also replaced the outdated phone system with a new, more reliable and cost-effective solution.

in addition, Queensland Computers reviewed Gidarjil’s existing Office 365 tenant settings and identified areas that required improvement. The team set up a new admin account for Gidarjil and configured MFA/2FA to ensure users were required to authenticate twice for logon purposes. Queensland Computers also provided user training on the use of MFA/2FA. MFA/2FA is a feature that adds an extra layer of verification to the sign-in process, such as a code sent to a phone or an app notification. It helps prevent attackers from compromising user accounts even if they have stolen or guessed the passwords.

Queensland Computers set up anti-spam and anti-phishing tools and SPF/DKIM/DMARC configuration to improve email security and protect against potential threats. This enhanced email security significantly, as Gidarjil relied extensively on email for communication and collaboration. This also increased Gidarjil’s email deliverability and reputation, as receivers will trust your messages more and less likely mark them as spam.

Queensland Computers also helped Gidarjil obtain Not-for-profit status with Microsoft, which enabled them to access a range of Microsoft products and services at significantly reduced rates, including Office 365, Microsoft Teams, and SharePoint.

 2022 Hummingbird Lake Monduran Barra Classic is an event for anglers of all skill levels. Anglers can test themselves against the very best in Queensland for the chance to win their share of over 5K in prizes. 

Julie organised the 2022 Hummingbird Lake Monduran Barra Classic as an event for anglers of all skill levels, 20km north of Gin Gin on the Bruce Highway, a 4.5-hour drive from Brisbane.

The 2022 Hummingbird Lake Monduran Barra Classic engaged Queensland Computers’ help to provide Wi-Fi access to anglers during the tournament. This was necessary because many of the anglers replied on online resources to help them catch Barra. The dam is in an area with limited connectivity, so it was essential to have a reliable, high-speed internet connection.

 

THE CHALLENGE FOR THE 2022 HUMMINGBIRD LAKE MNODURAN BARRA CLASSIC

Providing internet access for anglers was proving to be complicated. Because the dam is located in a disconnected location, it was critical to have a dependable and high-speed internet connection.

The problem with using the standard NBN service in a rural location is that it can be unreliable. The NBN is often designed for areas with high population density, so getting a good signal in a rural area can be challenging.

 Without quality internet service, competitors wouldn’t have been able to

  • Submitting catches online
  • Check Live scoring updates on the website
  • Review the Leaderboard online

This benefit meant anglers didn’t have to return to the weigh-in station to report their catches and allowed them to continue fishing. The live scoring updates on the website were also critical in allowing people to follow the tournament as it happened. They could see how each angler was doing in real-time.

 

I didn’t know how to solve our internet problem when planning the event, so I started to ask around. Luke was referred to me, and after speaking with him, he said he could help me with Wi-Fi, which got the competition up and running. He was great to work with and took the time to understand our vision.

KEY OUTCOMES

In this case, we installed a temporary service just for the tournament weekend.

Due to Starlink access, Anglers could communicate their catches on the dam quickly and easily with their teammates. We were successfully able to  

  • Provide internet support not previously accessible to the competition

  • Give anglers access to Wi-Fi for the duration of the tournament

  • Assist Julie by converting text reports to an email service so that catches could be quickly reported and the scoring updated.

The 2022 Hummingbird Lake Monduran Barra Classic was a success due to the Julie’s organisation and collaboration and Queensland Computers. The Starlink service was a key reason for the tournament’s success. Not only for the anglers but also for Queensland Computers. It allowed them to showcase their newest product and how it can benefit businesses in rural areas with unreliable or no connectivity.

 As Australia’s leading importer, stockist, and wholesaler of commercial & hospitality furniture, Furnlink understands the importance of business security. They have been using traditional CCTV systems for many years, but we’re starting to experience some problems.

Old systems were difficult to manage and were no longer providing the level of security that Furnlink needed. They needed a system that was easy to use and would give the required level of protection.

We also collaborated closely with suppliers; they were involved in every step during system deployment because nothing is done without them, especially during a heavily COVID-impacted industry.

The Unifi platform gave us a cost-effective and flexible way to overcome the networking challenges at our sites, as we could provide multiple camera connections across numerous locations. It meant we could store all data on one Cloud Key, providing remote access for both workers needing assistance and security cameras monitoring customer behaviour within stores nationwide! Collaborating closely with suppliers helped deliver this system ahead of schedule – it had been designed so that the solution would seamlessly integrate them into Furnlink’s existing IT infrastructure without disrupting any processes or business functions.

QUEENSLAND COMPUTERS’ SOLUTION

Because Queensland Computers was already Daywalk’s managed IT provider (for over four years), our team had a great deal of insight into their company’s infrastructure, technology requirements and business goals. 

After speaking with their team, we determined that replacing Daywalk’s legacy telephone system with Microsoft Teams Calling was the optimal solution.

Daywalk was apprehensive about making such a significant change to the foundation of their IT landscape. To ensure that the wider organisation would be comfortable with Teams Calling, we proposed setting the system up for a handful of key users – to test its suitability – before rolling it out to the entire company.

This included: 

  • Implementing full unified communications-as-a-service (UCaaS) – with:
    • traditional phone system replacement, 
    • workspace chat, 
    • video-conferencing, 
    • screen and file sharing, and 
    • app integration.
  • Deploying Common Area Phone Licenses and numbers for all users.
  • Setting up call forwarding from the existing primary number.
  • Establishing a calling queue and out-of-hours voicemail to a group inbox.

After the successful test, Luke and Ethan (Director and Business Support Engineer, respectively) also visited Daywalk before the full transition to answer any questions and ensure that they were completely comfortable with the process.
